Zyrtec Usage

Zyrtec is prescribed to treat the sneezing; itchy, runny nose; and itchy, red, watery eyes caused by seasonal allergies such as hay fever. Zyrtec also relieves the symptoms of year-round allergies due to dust, mold, and animal dander. Zyrtec is also used in the treatment of chronic itchy skin and hives.

How To Take Zyrtec

Take Zyrtec by mouth usually twice daily with or without food; or as directed by your doctor. Zyrtec must be swallowed whole. Do not crush or chew the tablets. Zyrtec is not recommended for use in children under 12 years of age.

Zyrtec Side Effects

Drowsiness, dizziness, nervousness, nausea, headache, dry mouth, or unusual tiredness or weakness (fatigue) may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occurs: irregular heartbeat, unusually fast heartbeat, uncontrolled muscle movements (tremor), rash, chest pain, trouble sleeping. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: mental/mood changes, seizures, trouble breathing, trouble urinating, vision problems. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Precautions for Zyrtec

Zyrtec is not recommended for use if you have the following medical conditions: glaucoma (narrow-angle type), problems urinating (e.g., enlarged prostate), severe high blood pressure, severe heart/blood vessel disease (coronary artery disease), any problems taking decongestants (e.g., symptoms include trouble sleeping, dizziness, weakness, tremor, or irregular heartbeat). Tell your doctor your medical history, especially of: kidney problems, liver problems, asthma, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, thyroid problems, any allergies. Zyrtec may make you dizzy or drowsy; use caution engaging in activities requiring alertness such as driving or using machinery. Limit alcoholic beverages. Caution is advised when using Zyrtec in the elderly because they may be more sensitive to the effects of the drug. Zyrtec should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. Zyrtec passes into breast milk. Discuss the risks and benefits with your doctor.

Zyrtec Interactions

Zyrtec is not recommended for use with, or within 14 days of taking MAO inhibitors (e.g., furazolidone, isocarboxazid, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, tranylcypromine). Tell your doctor of all prescription and nonprescription medication you may use, especially: certain blood pressure medicine (e.g., methyldopa), adrenalin-like medicine (e.g., ephedrine, methylphenidate), certain herbal products (e.g., ephedra). Tell your doctor if you take any drugs that cause drowsiness such as: medicine for sleep, sedatives, tranquilizers, anti- anxiety drugs (e.g., diazepam, lorazepam), narcotic pain relievers (e.g., codeine), psychiatric medicines (e.g., phenothiazines such as chlorpromazine or tricyclic antidepressants such as amitriptyline), anti-seizure drugs (e.g., carbamazepine), muscle relaxants, certain antihistamines (e.g., diphenhydramine). Check the labels on all your medicines (e.g., cough-and-cold products) because they may cause drowsiness.

Zyrtec Missed Dosage

If you miss a Zyrtec dose, use it as soon as you remember. If it is near the time of the next dose, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double the dose to catch up.
