Neurontin Usage

Neurontin is used to manage pain in the area affected by herpes zoster after the disease has been treated. Neurontin is also used as part of overall therapy for the treatment of partial seizures in patients over 12 years of age with epilepsy and as part of overall therapy for the treatment of partial seizures in patients 3 to 12 years of age.

How To Take Neurontin

Take Neurontin with or without food. If you are taking antacids, take Neurontin at least 2 hours after taking the antacid. If Neurontin is stopped or if a different seizure medicine is added to therapy, this should be done gradually over a period of 1 week. Do not stop taking or giving Neurontin without checking with your doctor. Do not take or give any other over-the-counter or prescription medications without talking with your doctor. This includes and herbal preparations or dietary supplements. Withdrawal from this medication should be gradual. How much medicine you take and how often you take it depends on many factors, including the condition being treated and the age and weight of the patient. If you have any questions about the amount and/or frequency of the medicine you are taking/giving, talk with your health care provider. Carefully read the patient leaflet provided with Neurontin.

Neurontin Side Effects

Every medicine can cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Tell your doctor or pharmacist if any of the following occurs: Severe: Allergic reactions (giant hives; rash; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); hostility; memory loss; abnormal thoughts; convulsions; unusual lumps. Common: Drowsiness; dizziness; nausea; swelling of arms and legs; infection(fever, chills, sore throat); clumsiness; tiredness; diarrhea; dry mouth;constipation; tremor; runny nose. Children 3 to 12 years of age:Viral infection; fever; drowsiness; hostility; behavioral problems; abnormal thoughts; mood swings; aggressive behavior; restlessness; hyperactivity; change in school performance. Other: Weight gain; sore throat; double vision; ear infection; back pain; dental problems; increased appetite; depression; twitching; coughing; abrasions;itching; impotence; confusion; sleeplessness; rash; acne; rapid eye movements;vomiting; blurred vision; muscle aches; involuntary eye movements; nervousness;disturbed speech.

Precautions for Neurontin

If Neurontin is taken with certain other drugs, the effects of either can be increased, decreased, or altered. It is especially important to check with your doctor before combining Neurontin with the following: Antacids such as Maalox.

Neurontin Missed Dosage

If a Neurontin dose is missed, take or give it as soon as possible. If several hours have passed or if it is nearing time for the next dose, do not double the dose to catch up, unless advised by your doctor. If more than one dose is missed, restart medication and advise your doctor or pharmacist at your next visit.
